New Lenses!!

Lately I've finally been able to start shooting again. I finally got a tripod, and this week I snagged three Nikon lenses of ebay for a total of $200. Well, new to me lenses. They are almost 40 years old, but the universe was smiling on me when I chose a D3100 as my DSLR. When researching what lenses to buy I discovered the D3100 will accept pretty every manual lens Nikon has ever made. I prefer manual controls and focus. They are so much cheaper. Woot Woot!

Other than the image with the dogs, these panoramic landscapes are created from merging a number of shots together for the effect.

With a Little Help From My Musical Friends

These images are photos capturing my Fort Worth friends who also make music in their respective bands, my musician role models who are famous and little known, and those who shared in there minds, motivation, and our conversations from our fingers when making music. Many of my exposures are long, thirty seconds to two or three minutes. On some images I popped a hand held flash numerous times to capture elements of sharpness in the subject. The virtual volume in the images, created by the motions of the musicians while performing and practicing in extended exposures, represents the imagined visual rendering of those invisible sound waves of the music. Vibrations in the air have a wave like effect on me and the way I feel. Even the hum of an air conditioner has a tone or frequency that influences how the listener feels. It may be an unconscious or unaware influence but an influence none the less. Some sounds or vibrations in the air have a distinctly good or bad feeling of influence on who listens. I find it interesting to imagine the possible correlation between a sound's emotional weight and the emotional weight of a photograph capturing the act of making making sounds.

This collection of images is made up of 35mm, 6x6cm, 6x7cm, and 4x5" black and white film. They are environmental portraits, candid portraits, studio portraits, and unwitting participant portraits.

These images really spoke to the idea of the discrepency between our self identities and who we are in reality. That discrepancy is represented by the character that emerges in the images. These were made from two nearly identical portraits stacked together with one of the negatives reversed. The two identical portraits come to represent the self identity and our real selves. The character in the middle is a combination of the two and, a physical representation of our truest identity.
